How fitting works for wall beds

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wall beds are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

Wall beds for homes in Grange Mills

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that is used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. Most enquiries start with a spare room that’s rarely slept in and more floor space in a studio flat, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Grange Mills built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet to make use of the whole wall.

Is it time for wall beds?

A flexible room is useful as needs change. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • More floor space in a studio flat

For families living near Henry Cavendish Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

Common questions about wall beds

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Grange Mills is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Bedroom storage in Grange Mills

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Grange Mills, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Grange Mills is within about a quarter of a mile of the La Retraite Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Grange Mills, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Wandsworth Common, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Near listed buildings like The Bedford Hotel, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Grange Mills, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
