Under-stairs storage for your home in London Fields

About our under-stairs storage in London Fields

Each under-stairs cupboard is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in London Fields and fitted. Most enquiries start with a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around London Fields, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It helps to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. If the flat is leasehold, the lease may need checking before under-stairs cupboards are fixed to the walls.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Fitted storage in London Fields

Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the neighbourhood around London Fields, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of London Fields include The New Lansdowne Club (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in the streets around London Fields, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Living in a block of flats near London Fields station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Gayhurst Community School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

London Fields is about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch, part of the London Borough of Hackney. Whether your home in London Fields is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. London Fields is one of 20 places on our list for Hackney.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in London Fields

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in London Fields?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in London Fields. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to suit the room. Each one follows the line of the stairs above.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything isn’t right, use our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a drawer stops running smoothly, use our contact form and describe it.
