Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Talk to your other trades in good time

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.

It helps to know which appliances you want early. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

About our bespoke kitchens in Lambeth

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. People normally come to us about a layout for a small or awkward room and room for everything in the kitchen, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Lambeth date from 2000 onwards, and some came with kitchens that suit the building more than the people living in it. A bespoke kitchen can replace the original with cabinets made for your room, with the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Kitchens in Lambeth homes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Lambeth, with about 21% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 201 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Lambeth. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. About 36% of homes around Lambeth were built since 2000, well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 17%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Woodstock Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near Vauxhall Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Lambeth is about 2 miles south of Stockwell, in the London Borough of Lambeth. Wherever you are in Lambeth, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across the rest of London.

Postcode districts we cover here for bespoke kitchens: SE11, SW1P and SW8. Streets in the area include Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. The A3203 and A3204 runs close to Lambeth; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for bespoke kitchens include Vauxhall (1 mile north), Kennington (1 mile south), Oval (1 mile south), Newington Butts (1 mile east) and St George's Fields (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Stockwell (2 miles south), Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), Clapham (2 miles south-west), Brixton (2 miles south) and Loughborough Junction (2 miles south-east).

Near you in Lambeth

We fit furniture in homes around The Jolly Gardeners pub, Lilian Baylis Technology School and Lambeth Palace Library, among other places. There’s a railway station in Lambeth itself: Vauxhall station. Well-known places in the area include Evelina London Children's Hospital (0.5 miles north) and Baynard's Castle (1.7 miles north-east). Not far away are St. James's Park Lake.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Lambeth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lambeth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician, while we make and fit the cabinets.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Lambeth

An extension or a knocked-through room is a common starting point. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

Living in a block of flats near Vauxhall station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook. It’s useful to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. We do not arrange those trades, so it’s useful to book them early.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
