Wall Beds in Lisson Grove

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make wall beds for homes in Lisson Grove, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it helps to know about tight turns.

About our wall beds in Lisson Grove

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. Most enquiries start with a hobby room with a bed for guests and storage built around a fold-down bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Spare rooms in flats usually have more than one job, so fitted furniture that keeps things out of sight helps it switch between them. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Lisson Grove. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Lisson Grove affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near London Marylebone station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How much space does a wall bed need?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Bedroom storage in Lisson Grove

In the streets around Lisson Grove, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Fisherton Street Estate Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lisson Grove. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, particularly for larger pieces.

For families living near Gateway Academy, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Regent's Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Hanover Terrace, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
