Made-to-measure kitchens in Nunhead

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Nunhead went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Nunhead, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Nunhead, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Close to Peckham Rye? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For a flat near Nunhead station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Nunhead is part of the London Borough of Southwark, about 1 mile west of East Dulwich. We design and make bespoke kitchens for homes in Nunhead and the rest of Southwark. Our work takes in places right across Southwark, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Design visits and fitting in SE15, SE4 and SE14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Rye Road, Nash Road and Kitto Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. We also cover the places around Nunhead: Telegraph Hill (1 mile north-east), Honor Oak (1 mile south), Peckham (1 mile north-west), New Cross (1 mile north-east) and Brockley (1 mile south-east). Other parts of Southwark we cover include Herne Hill (2 miles west), Bermondsey (3 miles north-west), Elephant and Castle (3 miles north-west), Bankside (4 miles north-west), Southwark (3 miles north-west) and St George's Fields (3 miles north-west).

How we make bespoke kitchens for Nunhead

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a central island in a larger kitchen.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Nunhead, a chimney breast often survives in the kitchen, and it can frame a range cooker or a dresser. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

Door style makes a big difference to the look, whether plain or framed.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Pricing bespoke kitchens in Nunhead

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Nunhead station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nunhead?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can I have a kitchen island?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen

Do not leave water sitting on painted cabinets, particularly around the sink and dishwasher. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.

It is useful to know which appliances you want early. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.
