Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Under-stairs storage in Tyburn: what you get

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Tyburn, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Tyburn homes and under-stairs storage

About 50% of the homes in the area around Tyburn went up before 1919, and about 15% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Tyburn, Historic England’s list includes Home House (courtauld Institute) (Grade I), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Mark's (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the area around Tyburn (about 50%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In terraced houses of that age, the space under the stairs often holds the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, and they must stay reachable.

If you live near Hyde Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For an older house near Church of the Annunciation, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Tyburn?

Others are looking for a small place to work. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It is a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

If you live in a flat close to London Paddington station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

How to choose a carpenter in London

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. You choose the colour.

Questions from Tyburn

Does a conservation area in or near Tyburn affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Tyburn?

Yes. Tyburn is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
