Plumstead Loft Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Plumstead starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope

  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood

How we make loft storage for Plumstead

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. We design them around what you need to store in Plumstead. If you are living with low eaves that nobody can use and needing storage in a loft office, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Wherever your home in Plumstead sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Loft storage in Plumstead: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Plumstead were built before 1919 (about 39%) and since 2000 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Plumstead include The Old Vicarage (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Plumstead Fire Station (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Plumstead, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Danson House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For a flat near Plumstead station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near South Rise Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Plumstead is within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We design and make loft storage for homes in Plumstead and the rest of Greenwich. We cover places right across Greenwich, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Every address in SE18, SE28 and E16 is within our area for loft storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Our area takes in homes on streets like Moy Lane, Love Lane and Tuam Road, whether you want loft storage or another piece made for the room. Plumstead is near the A206, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. We also cover the places around Plumstead: Woolwich (1 mile west), Shooter's Hill (1 mile south-west), East Wickham (1 mile south-east), Charlton (2 miles west) and New Charlton (2 miles west). Other parts of Greenwich we cover include Greenwich (3 miles west), Eltham (3 miles south), Westcombe Park (3 miles west), Well Hall (2 miles south-west), Maze Hill (3 miles west) and Coldharbour (4 miles south). Being one of the larger places in Greenwich, Plumstead is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Plumstead?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Plumstead affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

How we price loft storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your loft. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
