South Hampstead Bespoke Kitchens
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in South Hampstead, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- A painted dresser for the kitchen
Bespoke kitchens for your home in South Hampstead
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Bespoke kitchens in South Hampstead: what you get
Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a layout for a small or awkward room and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.
Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. Since a large share of homes around South Hampstead are that old, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall cannot take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

South Hampstead homes and bespoke kitchens
In the streets around South Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 125 entries within half a mile of the centre of South Hampstead. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. All of London, Camden included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to South Hampstead fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For an older house near Church of All Souls, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
South Hampstead is part of the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. From period terraces to newer flats in South Hampstead, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In Camden, South Hampstead is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 28 places on our list.
Here we cover the NW3, NW8 and NW6 postcode area for bespoke kitchens. We cover homes on streets like Avenue Road, Acacia Road and Harben Road, for bespoke kitchens and any of our other fitted furniture. Close by, we also work in Swiss Cottage (1 mile north), St John's Wood (1 mile south), Haverstock (1 mile east), Belsize Park (1 mile east) and Primrose Hill (1 mile east). Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in St Pancras (3 miles south-east), West End (3 miles south-east), St Giles (3 miles south-east), Seven Dials (3 miles south-east), Holborn (3 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (2 miles south-east).
Near you in South Hampstead
The streets we cover here include those near Cafe Med pub, Holy Trinity CofE Primary School and Cecil Sharp House. South Hampstead has its own railway station: South Hampstead station. Other landmarks nearby include Isokon Gallery (0.8 miles north-east) and Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth (0.7 miles south). Green spaces nearby include Adelaide Nature Reserve.
What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You let us know about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.
Preparing the room
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Questions we are often asked
My house in South Hampstead is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in South Hampstead?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What does a bespoke kitchen cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the number of units and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
How we price bespoke kitchens
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How square the room is
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What we need to know
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do you need bespoke kitchens in South Hampstead?
Some want a kitchen that suits a period house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and look as if they belong.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Extra cupboard space
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- Tall larder storage
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
Close to Primrose Hill? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
- New sockets or circuits
- Any work on the gas supply
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
