Loft Storage in South Hampstead

- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- No wardrobe that fits under the slope
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
Loft storage designed for your room
Is it time for loft storage?
Boxes, suitcases and seasonal things need a home. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. The room stays calm and clear.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- A loft room with too many jobs
- Boxes piled on loft boards
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Belsize Fire Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Loft storage in South Hampstead
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We will go through the options in South Hampstead. If you’re living with wasted space behind the knee walls and unused space in a dormer, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around South Hampstead, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions from South Hampstead
My home in South Hampstead is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in South Hampstead?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Drawers in the knee wall usually involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself isn’t ours.
Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave tricky gaps under the slope. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is the space it uses. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

How fitting works for loft storage
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

Advice
Before and after fitting day
People planning loft storage often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The edges around handles are touched most.
Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 125 entries within half a mile of the centre of South Hampstead. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in South Hampstead joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Souls, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If your children go to The UCL Academy or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
