TV and media units in South Hampstead

About our TV and media units in South Hampstead

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. Viewing height matters too: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and boxes with no ventilation.

Around South Hampstead, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What we don’t do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions we are often asked

My home in South Hampstead is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

I live near South Hampstead station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in South Hampstead?

Just use our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The unit is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What affects the price in South Hampstead

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

What we need to know

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Built-in living-room furniture in South Hampstead

Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around South Hampstead, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of South Hampstead, Historic England’s list includes Belsize Fire Station (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Devonshire Lodge (Grade II*), less than half a mile south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Camden included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in South Hampstead. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

For families living near The UCL Academy, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Primrose Hill, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Living in a block of flats near South Hampstead station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
