Fitted Wardrobes in Tyburn

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Tyburn, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Tyburn

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Most enquiries start with mismatched bedroom furniture and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Tyburn, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the price in Tyburn

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions from Tyburn

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Tyburn?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Tyburn affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use

For families living near Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.

Hanging rails

Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.

Fitted wardrobes in Tyburn: local notes

In the area around Tyburn, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 350 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tyburn. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Westminster included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Tyburn, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Home House (courtauld Institute), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For an older house near Church of the Annunciation, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
