Under-stairs storage for homes in Westminster
Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Westminster. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.
With a large share of homes around Westminster built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What affects the price in Westminster
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How square the room is
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
Getting in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Any ideas or images you have saved

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and made in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

From workshop to your room
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Tell us about parking near your home
Ask for a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Under-stairs storage for homes in Westminster
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Westminster were built before 1919 (about 47%) and since 2000 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 412 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Westminster. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance.
If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. Near listed buildings like London Underground Headquarters, less than half a mile west of the centre of Westminster, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to St James's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
Westminster is part of the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster. Whether your home in Westminster is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Westminster
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Westminster?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
My home in Westminster is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What affects the price of under-stairs storage?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Westminster?
It is easiest to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
The drawers under a staircase can carry a real load. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws well. Long shelves benefit from it too.
Doors and drawer fronts
Any access door for a meter can be made to look like the other fronts. It opens wide so readings and checks are easy. Around it, the other fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.
