Tyburn Walk-in Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Tyburn, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A use for a small spare room
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • More space for clothes and shoes

Walk-in wardrobes in Tyburn

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why us?

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Walk-in wardrobes in Tyburn: what you get

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. Most enquiries start with shelves for shoes and bags and a calmer, clearer bedroom; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Tyburn are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do you cover homes near London Paddington station?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Tyburn?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Tyburn homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Tyburn, with about 15% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 350 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tyburn. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Tyburn will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

For a flat near London Paddington station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Near listed buildings like Home House (courtauld Institute), less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Tyburn, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near Church of the Annunciation, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Tyburn

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.
