Walk-in wardrobes in Avery Hill

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Avery Hill and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, followed by a quote. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Typical reasons to get in touch are hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and more space for clothes and shoes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Avery Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bedroom storage in Avery Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Avery Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Avery Hill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Greenwich included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Avery Hill is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Stationers' Crown Woods Academy or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Avery Hill Training College (main Doorway, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 1.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Avery Hill is about 2 miles north of Plumstead, part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Wherever you are in Avery Hill, it works the same way: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Avery Hill is one of 18 places on our list for Greenwich.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Falconwood station?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Avery Hill affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Why bespoke in Avery Hill?

A basic rail system is easy to change, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
