Loft storage in Avery Hill, Greenwich

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Avery Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Needing storage in a loft office

Questions from Avery Hill

Can you make loft storage for a home in Avery Hill?

Yes, we work across Greenwich, Avery Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Avery Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Loft storage for homes in Avery Hill

Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the design visit in Avery Hill. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Avery Hill, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. You will know it all works as it should.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Why bespoke in Avery Hill?

Standard furniture doesn’t allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. Bespoke storage is designed so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. That’s important for the health of the loft. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Avery Hill

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • Electrical work in the loft

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Avery Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Avery Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Avery Hill include Avery Hill Training College (main Doorway (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Church of Holy Trinity (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 52% of homes in the streets around Avery Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use.

If you live in a period home close to Church of Holy Trinity, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. For a family home near Stationers' Crown Woods Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Living in a block of flats near Falconwood station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
