How we make walk-in wardrobes for Greenwich

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, and we design the units to allow for it. Most enquiries start with a bedroom without crowded wardrobes and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Around Greenwich, where many homes were built since 2000, it is part of every design visit. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Greenwich

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Greenwich?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

My home in Greenwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

It’s your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the units are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.

Doors and drawer fronts

We can include a dressing table with drawers if the room allows.

What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Structural changes or removing walls
  • Curing damp in the walls
  • Painting the walls of the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Greenwich

Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life instead of a store for odds and ends.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

Close to Island Gardens? Walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Greenwich

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Greenwich were built before 1919 (about 36%) and since 2000 (about 35%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 183 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Greenwich. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. About 51% of households in the area around Greenwich live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Living in a block of flats near Maze Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
