Walk-in wardrobes in Plaistow

Walk-in wardrobes in Plaistow

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a calmer, clearer bedroom and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom.

Wherever your home in Plaistow sits in London’s mix of housing, walk-in wardrobes are designed for the room as it is. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and usually cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Plaistow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near West Ham station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

Often, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the units are fitted. Marks are simple to touch in.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Plaistow

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Plaistow, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 14 entries within half a mile of the centre of Plaistow. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than a third of the homes in the area around Plaistow (about 40%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe.

Near listed buildings like St Andrew's Vicarage, less than half a mile east of the centre of Plaistow, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near Kaizen Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live near Keir Hardie Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
