Walk-in wardrobes in Newham: how it works

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. Most enquiries start with hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

How our quotes work

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes across Newham

Homes across Newham, Plaistow, Stratford and Canning Town included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Walk-in wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in Newham, with about 29% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. A quarter or more of the homes in Newham (about 29%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 31% of households in Newham live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Newham, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.

Plaistow: If you live in a period home close to Memorial Community Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your children go to Kaizen Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Know what you’ll keep before planning

Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them, so the space keeps working. It is worth a rethink each season.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We make and fit the units inside.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • How you want to use the space

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the units are fitted. Marks are simple to touch in.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, giving a smooth finish.

Questions from Newham

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No. New lights and wiring are for your electrician. We design the units so the lighting can fit in and talk it through when we measure.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
