Walk-in wardrobes in Greengate, Newham

Thinking about walk-in wardrobes in Greengate? We start with a design visit and a written quote.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Greengate

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes.

Around Greengate, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Let air move through the space

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.

Questions from Greengate

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Greengate?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My home in Greengate is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Doors and drawer fronts

We can include a dressing table with drawers where there is space.

Moisture-resistant MDF

The moisture-resistant grade suits walk-in wardrobes on external walls, with ventilation allowed for.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Greengate

Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so both have room.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • A side each for a couple
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom

Close to West Ham Park? Walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Walk-in wardrobes in Greengate: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 56% of the housing in the area around Greengate, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Greengate include Essex Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Passmore Edwards Library (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Newham is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Greengate is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For an older house near St Andrew's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near West Ham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It is useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
