For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Greengate. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the area around Greengate (about 56%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site.

For an older house near St Andrew's Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For families living near Southern Road Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Greengate

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, so everything fits as it should. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and room for everything in the kitchen.

Sash windows and back doors to the garden are common in older kitchens. With a large share of the homes around Greengate built before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. The worktop, sink and appliances are your choice.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Pricing bespoke kitchens in Greengate

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Room for everything in the kitchen

Close to West Ham Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Questions from Greengate

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Greengate?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you cover homes near West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.
