Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Haggerston
About 35% of the homes in the area around Haggerston went up since 2000, and about 31% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Haggerston is partly covered by the Kingsland Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Haggerston (about 35%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
If you live in a flat close to Hoxton station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your children go to Randal Cremer Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Haggerston is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. We cover Haggerston as part of our work across Hackney, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Hackney, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Design visits and fitting in N1, E2 and E8 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street such as Hyde Road, Glebe Road and Ufton Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. Haggerston sits close to the A1208. Neighbouring places we cover for walk-in wardrobes include Hoxton (1 mile west), Shoreditch (1 mile south), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile north), Kingsland (1 mile north) and Bethnal Green (1 mile south-east). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Homerton (2 miles north-east), West Hackney (2 miles north), Lower Clapton (2 miles north-east), Stoke Newington (2 miles north), Clapton (2 miles north-east) and Stamford Hill (2 miles north).

Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. People usually come to us about a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and room for a growing wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Many homes around Haggerston were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Looking after your furniture
Getting the most from walk-in wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Let air move through the space
- Think about where shoes and bags will go
Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. It is worth a rethink each season.
It helps to know what you will keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It’s useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.
Related advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, so very little space goes to waste. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?
Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. Many people choose to fit it out as a dressing room.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
- A dressing area in part of a bedroom
- More space for clothes and shoes
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
What to check before you book
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Where they’ll park and unload

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hoxton station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Haggerston?
Yes. Haggerston is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?
It’s your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. Many people choose a mix.
