Walk-in wardrobes in West Hackney: walk-in wardrobes and dressing rooms. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.

Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes and rarely reach the ceiling. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, so very little space goes to waste. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Work across the whole of London

Walk-in wardrobes in West Hackney

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. If you are living with somewhere for shoes to live and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around West Hackney, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let air move through the space
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in West Hackney

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around West Hackney, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 61 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Hackney. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 53% of households in the neighbourhood around West Hackney live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Barnabas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Rectory Road station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Sutton House, about 1.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

West Hackney is about 2 miles south of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Whether your home in West Hackney is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Hackney.

Every home in N16, E5 and E8 is within our area for walk-in wardrobes. Streets in the area include Muir Road, Burma Road and Piano Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for walk-in wardrobes. Main roads around West Hackney include the A107. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around West Hackney: Shacklewell (1 mile south), Stoke Newington (1 mile west), Clapton (1 mile east), Stamford Hill (1 mile north) and Upper Clapton (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Shoreditch (2 miles south), Hoxton (2 miles south), Hackney (2 miles south-east), Haggerston (2 miles south) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles east). Being one of the larger places in Hackney, West Hackney is covered for walk-in wardrobes and everything else we make.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Hackney?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, use our contact form.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.
