How we make walk-in wardrobes for Kingsland
Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. If you’re living with a calmer, clearer bedroom and a use for a small spare room, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Spare rooms in flats typically have more than one job, so fitted furniture that keeps things out of sight helps it switch between them. Around Kingsland, most households live in purpose-built flats. Doors and drawers are planned to open fully in the space you have.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions from Kingsland
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dalston Junction station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is Kingsland in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes, we work across Hackney, Kingsland included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Electrical work in the room
- Advice on your lease
- Making good walls and ceilings
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
- Line up your electrician for any new lights
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
Keep the room ventilated, particularly if it’s on an external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes, so air can circulate.
Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and it is easier to plan the units around it from the start.
From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It is useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- We send a quote in writing.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The units are brought in, assembled and set level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve
Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe next to the hanging and shoe storage.
Requests we hear often include:
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, about 0.5 miles north of the centre of Kingsland, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Kingsland homes and walk-in wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the streets around Kingsland, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Kingsland. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hackney included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Kingsland, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
If you live in a flat close to Dalston Junction station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Shoreditch Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
