Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Dalston

Walk-in wardrobes in Dalston: what you get

You don’t need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a calmer, clearer bedroom and somewhere for shoes to live.

In a block, a bedroom wall may be shared with the neighbours or the corridor, and that wall could be solid or plasterboard. Around Dalston, where most households live in purpose-built flats, we choose fixings that suit the wall and keep drilling to what’s needed. Tall pieces are always fixed back.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Dalston

In the area around Dalston, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Dalston include Church of St Mark (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Church of St Barnabas (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Dalston joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Sutton House, about 0.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Dalston is about 1 mile south of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. We design and make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Dalston, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across Hackney.

Here we cover the E8, N1 and N16 postcode area for walk-in wardrobes. If your home is on a street like Glebe Road, Forest Road and Boleyn Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. Dalston sits close to the A107 and A1207, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you are just outside Dalston, we also cover Kingsland (1 mile west), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile west), Hackney Central (1 mile east), London Fields (1 mile south-east) and Shacklewell (1 mile north). Elsewhere in Hackney, we also cover Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (2 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Think about long versus double hanging
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own

Store heavy things on lower shelves, and don’t overload a single rail. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.

Doors and drawer fronts

A dressing table with drawers can be built in if the room allows.

Is bespoke worth it?

There’s a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For tricky rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. The sections are assembled once inside.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Dalston

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Dalston?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London, and Dalston is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Dalston?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
