About walk-in wardrobes in Hackney
Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about proper shoe storage and a built-in dressing table.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- You let us know about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
- We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.
How our quotes work
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What you get with us
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Every quote follows a design visit
- A spray or hand-painted finish
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Walk-in wardrobes across Hackney: local notes
In Hackney, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Walk-in wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.
The biggest shares of homes in Hackney were built before 1919 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in Hackney, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in Hackney are well within our area. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
Shoreditch: If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Shoreditch, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
What affects the price in Hackney
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Parking near your home
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The number of doors and drawers
- How big the furniture is
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you contact us:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Is bespoke worth it?
Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
What prompts walk-in wardrobes
Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.
People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Hackney
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?
It is your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
Do you do the electrics for the lighting?
No, that is electrical work for your electrician. We make and fit the furniture and plan space for the lighting you want.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk it through during the design visit.
