Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Haggerston?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Haggerston. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How do I get started?

Simply send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Fitted wardrobes in Haggerston

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around Haggerston were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Haggerston

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Haggerston were built since 2000 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 101 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Haggerston. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Fewer homes around Haggerston date from before 1919 than across Hackney: about 17%, against about 35%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So the walls behind fitted wardrobes here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the measuring visit.

If you live near Haggerston Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like St Columba's Vicarage, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Hoxton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house and are made for that room alone. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it is useful to sort them out ahead of time. Fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. How we price fitted wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
