Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room
Walk-in wardrobes in Ladywell
Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If you are living with turning a box room into a dressing room and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Ladywell built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
- We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Questions from Ladywell
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Ladywell?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
My home in Ladywell is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A basic rail system is easy to change, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Plastering, decorating or flooring
- Getting consent under your lease
- Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician

Fitted bedroom furniture in Ladywell
About 58% of the homes in the streets around Ladywell went up before 1919, and about 17% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 20 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ladywell. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Living in a block of flats near Ladywell station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary the Virgin, less than half a mile north of the centre of Ladywell, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary the Virgin, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.
What to send when you contact us
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
