About our walk-in wardrobes in Telegraph Hill
A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about more space for clothes and shoes and room for two wardrobes in one space.
Around Telegraph Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Telegraph Hill
Does a conservation area in or near Telegraph Hill affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Telegraph Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?
Yes, if there is enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

Advice
Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, so very little space goes to waste. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Telegraph Hill
About 49% of the homes in the area around Telegraph Hill went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 16 entries within half a mile of the centre of Telegraph Hill. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Telegraph Hill needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
Close to Fordham Park? Walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near Haberdashers' Hatcham College, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Queen's House, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
