Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Walk-in wardrobes in Lee

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere to sit and get ready and room for a growing wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Lee, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit walk-in wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Lee

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Proper shoe storage
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

Close to Manor House Gardens? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes and rarely reach the ceiling. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, which can add a lot of storage. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Lee

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Lee went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Lee. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in the neighbourhood around Lee, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a flat near Lee station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Eltham Palace, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Lee is about 2 miles north-west of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. From period terraces to newer flats in Lee, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Lewisham, Lee is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Lee?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Lee is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. First, you let us know about the space. A line on how you’ll use the room helps.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
