How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

About our walk-in wardrobes in Bexley

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, and open rails make it quick to find things. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and somewhere for shoes to live.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Bexley, bedrooms normally have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, use our contact form.

Questions from Bexley

I live near Bexley station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bexley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It’s your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.

What we don’t do

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work in the room
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Building work to create the room

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Shoe storage
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Dressing table

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Count your coats and long garments

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Bexley homes and walk-in wardrobes

In the streets around Bexley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Bexley is within about a quarter of a mile of the Parkhurst Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the area around Bexley (about 31%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Red House, about 0.9 miles north. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near Danson Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For an older house near Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Bexley is about 2 miles south-west of Sidcup, within the London Borough of Bexley. Anywhere in Bexley, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across the rest of London.
