Walk-in Wardrobes in Northumberland Heath

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Northumberland Heath, each designed at a visit to your home.

Walk-in wardrobes in Northumberland Heath

Walk-in wardrobes in Northumberland Heath: what you get

You do not need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. If you’re living with a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Northumberland Heath, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. We can design a dressing table into the room, close to the clothes and shoes.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

If you live near Braeburn Park, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. It is worth a rethink each season.

It’s useful to know what you will keep before we measure. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Northumberland Heath

Is parking a problem for fitting in Northumberland Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Northumberland Heath?

Yes, Northumberland Heath is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Bedrooms in Northumberland Heath: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Northumberland Heath were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Northumberland Heath. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Bexley sets its own rules. If your street in Northumberland Heath is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Barnehurst station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near King Henry School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
