Walk-in Wardrobes in Finsbury

Thinking about walk-in wardrobes in Finsbury? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A built-in dressing table
  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Finsbury

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. Typical reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and proper shoe storage, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Finsbury date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Finsbury?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Old Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Know what you will keep before planning

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change to suit what you store. It is worth a rethink each season.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry piles of clothes need a strong board, and birch plywood helps.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the units are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out beforehand. Walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
