Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Highbury
How we make walk-in wardrobes for Highbury
A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, especially on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, so we allow for it in the design. Typical reasons to get in touch are a built-in dressing table and turning a box room into a dressing room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Highbury built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Make sure walls are dry before units go in
- Count your coats and long garments
- Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
- Have a clear-out before we measure
Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, especially if it’s on an external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes to help air move.
If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. External walls can be colder and damper, and ventilation inside the units helps.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Highbury
I live in a flat in Highbury. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Highbury?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?
Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate and walls should be dry before we fit.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the room.
- We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- We send a written quote.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve
Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- A calmer, clearer bedroom
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
- Turning a box room into a dressing room
- The right mix of long and short hanging

Highbury homes and walk-in wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Highbury were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 92 entries within half a mile of the centre of Highbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 29% of households in the neighbourhood around Highbury, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Near listed buildings like Union Chapel, about 0.6 miles south-west of the centre of Highbury, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
