St Luke's Walk-in Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in St Luke's starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A side each for a couple
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in St Luke's

In the area around St Luke's, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. St Luke's is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your children go to St Luke's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Wesley's Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 0.8 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

St Luke's is about 2 miles north of Highbury, within the London Borough of Islington. Whether your home in St Luke's is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. St Luke's is one of the places in Islington where we make walk-in wardrobes.

St Luke's sits close to the A1 and A501. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for walk-in wardrobes include Finsbury (1 mile south), Barbican Estate (1 mile south), Shoreditch (1 mile east), Hoxton (1 mile north-east) and City of London (1 mile south). Other parts of Islington we cover include Highbury (2 miles north), Barnsbury (2 miles north-west), Holloway (2 miles north-west), Mildmay (2 miles north), Upper Holloway (3 miles north-west) and Nag's Head (2 miles north-west). Walk-in wardrobes in St Luke's: what you get

Many London homes have a small room that is awkward as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. If you’re living with a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and somewhere to sit and get ready, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large number of homes around St Luke's date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Questions we are often asked

My home in St Luke's is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Old Street station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Painting the walls of the room
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Shoe storage
  • Dressing table
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, with everyday items lower down.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For awkward rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
