Questions from Old Chiswick

Does a conservation area in or near Old Chiswick affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Old Chiswick in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, Old Chiswick is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it at the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

About our wall beds in Old Chiswick

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage built around a fold-down bed and a studio that works by day and night; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Old Chiswick date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Old Chiswick

About 55% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Old Chiswick went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Old Chiswick. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Old Chiswick, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Walpole House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near The William Hogarth Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. The wider area includes historic houses like Hogarth's House, about 0.4 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Old Chiswick is about 5 miles west of Hounslow, part of the London Borough of Hounslow. Homes in Old Chiswick are part of the area we cover for wall beds. Our Hounslow coverage includes Old Chiswick, along with the rest of the borough.

Design visits and fitting in W4, SW13 and W6 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

What affects the price in Old Chiswick

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits a cabinet you want to look crisp and is finished before it reaches you.

Bed mechanism housing

The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the bed size you choose.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wall beds are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. First, you tell us about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
