How we make walk-in wardrobes for Hammersmith
Good light helps you see colours and find things. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We plan the units with your electrician’s work in mind and agree the details when we measure. If your home has a built-in dressing table and a side each for a couple, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Hammersmith date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Hammersmith?
Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
Requests we hear often include:
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
- Proper shoe storage
- A use for a small spare room
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
The wider area includes historic houses like Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
Before you choose who makes it
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
What affects the price in Hammersmith
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The width and height of the space
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Your postcode and the borough
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Have a clear-out before we measure
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Hammersmith homes and walk-in wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the area around Hammersmith, with about 9% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Hammersmith, Historic England’s list includes Convent and School of the Sacred Heart (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Church of the Holy Innocents (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 45% of households in the neighbourhood around Hammersmith, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For a flat near Kensington Olympia station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Brook Green? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Hammersmith
Does a conservation area in or near Hammersmith affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
My home in Hammersmith is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?
Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.
How are walk-in wardrobes priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First, you tell us about the space and how you dress.
- We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
- We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish.
- Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
