Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Pollards Hill

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Most enquiries start with room for a growing wardrobe and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Pollards Hill, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Count your coats and long garments
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Pollards Hill

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Pollards Hill, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Pollards Hill, Historic England’s list includes Norbury Hall (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Croydon has its own. If your road in Pollards Hill falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Grangewood Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Pollards Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Pollards Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Norbury station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. A section of the room can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
