Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Streatham Park
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Streatham Park
Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Streatham Park, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Streatham Park is in the Streatham Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 31% of households in the streets around Streatham Park live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Living in a block of flats near Streatham station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Walk-in wardrobes in Streatham Park: what you get
With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. If you’re living with moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a built-in dressing table, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Streatham Park date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Streatham Park?
Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Streatham Park included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live near Streatham station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?
Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Where other trades come in
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:
- Damp treatment or repairs
- Electrical work in the room
- Building a new partition wall
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Plan shoe storage around what you own
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high, and don’t overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.
If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
- A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
