About our walk-in wardrobes in Whitton

Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, so we allow for it in the design. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are turning a box room into a dressing room and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Whitton, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • How you want to use the space

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Whitton

In the streets around Whitton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 56%) and before 1919 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Whitton. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a flat close to Whitton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Brinsworth House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so neither of you is squeezed.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A side each for a couple
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • More space for clothes and shoes

For a family home near Royal Military School of Music, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do you cover homes near Whitton station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Whitton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
