Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Walk-in wardrobes in Ivybridge

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. If you’re living with a side each for a couple and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Ivybridge, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Is Ivybridge in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and Ivybridge is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Twickenham station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, if there’s enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It is your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

Bedroom storage in Ivybridge

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Ivybridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Ivybridge, 8 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If you live in a flat close to Twickenham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Hallows, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Chase Bridge Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
