Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Balham

Walk-in wardrobes in Balham: what you get

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. If you’re living with the right mix of long and short hanging and shelves for shoes and bags, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around Balham, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To make a start, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

A basic rail system is easy to change, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, painted to match the room. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Bedroom storage in Balham

About 64% of the homes in the streets around Balham went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Balham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Balham is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live near Wandsworth Common, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Balham, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For families living near Ravenstone Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Questions from Balham

My house in Balham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Balham?

Yes. Balham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
