Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Swiss Cottage

About our walk-in wardrobes in Swiss Cottage

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. Most enquiries start with moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and long and double hanging planned around your clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Swiss Cottage, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • A use for a small spare room
  • More space for clothes and shoes

If you live in a flat close to South Hampstead station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, in a finish that suits the house. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Questions from Swiss Cottage

My home in Swiss Cottage is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near South Hampstead station?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Bedroom storage in Swiss Cottage

About 47% of the homes in the area around Swiss Cottage went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Belsize Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Swiss Cottage. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Swiss Cottage (about 47%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Belsize Fire Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Swiss Cottage is in the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. Swiss Cottage is part of the area we cover. Swiss Cottage is one of the places in Camden where we make walk-in wardrobes.

Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in St Pancras (3 miles south-east), West End (3 miles south-east), St Giles (3 miles south-east), Seven Dials (3 miles south-east), Holborn (3 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (2 miles south-east).

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
