Walk-in wardrobes in St John's Wood

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Most enquiries start with somewhere to sit and get ready and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most households around St John's Wood live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, bedrooms rarely have space to spare. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, then put together in the room.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for drawers and long shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later.

Walk-in wardrobes in St John's Wood: local notes

In the area around St John's Wood, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The St John's Wood Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of St John's Wood. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In St John's Wood, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Winfield House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For a family home near George Eliot Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in St John's Wood

Does a conservation area in or near St John's Wood affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in St John's Wood?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and St John's Wood is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

Honest limits

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Plastering, decorating or flooring
  • Building work to create the room

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so both have room.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • A use for a small spare room
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Souls, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
