When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Swiss Cottage
Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. If you’re living with a cupboard for the meters with easy access and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A large share of the homes around Swiss Cottage were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

Fitted cupboards in Swiss Cottage: local notes
About 47% of the homes in the streets around Swiss Cottage went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Belsize Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Swiss Cottage. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 57% of households in the streets around Swiss Cottage live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your children go to The UCL Academy or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For a flat near South Hampstead station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

For a walk, there is Adelaide Nature Reserve.
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
- Storage for towels and bedding
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.
Before you choose who makes it
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Make sure walls are dry before we fit
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
- Leave room in front of the meters
Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.
Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch with some details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
- A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Arranging a design visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Questions from Swiss Cottage
I live in a flat in Swiss Cottage. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Swiss Cottage?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long does fitting take?
Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes, while keeping access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.
What do fitted cupboards cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
