Walk-in wardrobes in South Hampstead

About our walk-in wardrobes in South Hampstead

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is made at our workshop and fitted to the room, scribed to the walls and set level. Most enquiries start with room for two wardrobes in one space and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around South Hampstead are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in South Hampstead

My home in South Hampstead is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

My home in South Hampstead is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror

Close to Primrose Hill? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

Shelves

Shelves suit folded clothes, bags and boxes. Each shelf is sized for its load.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Fitted bedroom furniture in South Hampstead

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Hampstead were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 125 entries within half a mile of the centre of South Hampstead. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in South Hampstead needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

For a flat near South Hampstead station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

South Hampstead is about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. Whether your home in South Hampstead is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Camden.
