How we make walk-in wardrobes for Redbridge

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. People typically come to us about turning a box room into a dressing room and somewhere to sit and get ready, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Redbridge, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Ilford station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Redbridge?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through at the design visit.

What affects the price in Redbridge

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • A built-in dressing table

If your children go to Redbridge Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

Talk to your electrician early about lighting. New lights and wiring are for them, and it’s easier to plan the units around it from the start.

Bedrooms in Redbridge: local notes

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Valentines Park, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
