Walk-in Wardrobes in West Heath

In West Heath, we design walk-in wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your walk-in wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • A use for a small spare room

Walk-in wardrobes for your home in West Heath

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

About our walk-in wardrobes in West Heath

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a use for a small spare room.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around West Heath is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for drawers and long shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Hanging rails

Two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in West Heath

Does a conservation area in or near West Heath affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in West Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.

West Heath homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 73% of the housing in the area around West Heath, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Heath, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 79% of households in the area around West Heath live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Close to Lesnes Abbey Woods? Walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For an older house near St Andrew's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For a flat near Abbey Wood station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
