Fitted cupboards for homes in West Kensington

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cupboards that suit a period house and a cupboard for the meters with easy access.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around West Kensington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

Adjustable shelves let you change the layout later as your storage changes.

Plinths and scribe strips

These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Why us?

  • Built around your room
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

FAQs: fitted cupboards in West Kensington

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in West Kensington?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and West Kensington is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

My home in West Kensington is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Storage in West Kensington homes: local notes

In the area around West Kensington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 11%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 39 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Kensington. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 68% of homes in the streets around West Kensington were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses of that age have plenty of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight, with each one scribed to the wall.

Garden Lodge, about 0.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Some spaces are just hard to use. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Using the full height of a room

For a flat near Kensington Olympia station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
