Wall beds in Abbey Wood, Greenwich

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Abbey Wood starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Wall beds in Abbey Wood

Our wall beds are made for homes in Abbey Wood and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, then a written quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your home has a studio that works by day and night and a home office that also sleeps guests, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A good share of the homes around Abbey Wood were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple shapes, so fitted furniture can run cleanly across a wall. Some post-war homes have an original cupboard over the stairs that can be rebuilt as part of the design. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What wall beds cannot fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Advice on your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Concrete and block walls can make it hard to fix ready-made furniture securely, while fitted furniture is planned with the right fixings from the start. That matters for tall units and loaded shelves.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

Questions from Abbey Wood

Do you make wall beds for homes in Abbey Wood?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Abbey Wood is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Abbey Wood affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

We check that at the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That comes down to the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Abbey Wood homes and wall beds

Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Abbey Wood, with about 35% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Abbey Wood is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Greenwich included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Abbey Wood, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Nicholas (plumstead), about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Abbey Wood, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Danson House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near Saint Michael and All Angels, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

How fitting works for wall beds

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and go through the design. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
