Wall beds in Catford

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If you are living with a flexible room for a growing family and hiding the bed when it’s not in use, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Catford date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

FAQs: wall beds in Catford

Can you make wall beds for a home in Catford?

Yes, Catford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Catford affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

How are wall beds priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Bedrooms in Catford: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Catford were built before 1919 (about 68%) and since 2000 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Catford is in the Culverley Green Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Lewisham included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Catford, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Catford Bridge station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For families living near Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Why people ask for wall beds in Catford

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it make the whole wall useful.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting works for wall beds

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
